Walking in Our Shoes

We are well into the new year and many of you have made a promise to yourself in 2013 – to be more active. I highly recommend that you make a goal of walking 150 minutes per week for optimum health. By simply walking more during your day, you’ll probably begin to feel better both physically and mentally.

Throughout this endeavor, I also want to focus on the importance of being fitted in supportive footwear. The orthotic technology I’ve designed into Orthaheel products helps support you from the time you get on your feet in the morning till the time you put them up in the evening. From the ground up, the essential tri-planar motion control helps realign your feet and legs, and may help relieve associated aches and pains.

Because every shoe and sandal style features this patented technology, you can work toward your wellness goals whether you’re sporting a pair of Orthaheel walkers, mules or sandals. I sincerely hope our products contribute to your health and wellness now and in the future.

Fall is Here

Fall is here and with the cooler weather, many of you will be putting away your trusted Tide flip flops. We know the hustle and bustle of daily activities continues regardless of the weather, but your feet have the same biomechanical needs no matter the temperature, task or location. I highly recommend you wear supportive footwear from the moment you get out of bed in the morning. With this in mind, we have developed an array of closed-toe shoes and comfy house slippers with built-in orthotic technology to take you through Fall and Winter with comfort and alignment.

Our customers agree and we couldn’t be happier to share their satisfaction with you. Orthaheel enthusiast Sharon gives us a raving review about our Gemma slipper, “Finally! A comfortable slipper without pain. I cannot go barefoot at all due to plantar fasciitis and these are wonderful. Soft, warm, and pain free.”

Remember, we take about 8-10,000 footsteps per day. If you’re walking a little bit abnormally or your posture’s just not correct – take 10,000 steps and the result can be painful. I hope you’ll choose to reclaim your footprint with Orthaheel technology and enjoy well-being in every step. Whether you choose a pair of slippers, loafers or boots, you’ll experience better alignment and support in the shoes I’ve created.

Recover Like an Olympian

The Summer Olympic games are here and the athletes in London have captivated people all around the world. During this time, we see through a tiny window, the perfect performances, the emotion of the pursuit and the comradery within each team. What we are unable to see is just how hard these athletes train when they’re out of the spotlight. Most of us can only imagine the dedication required to attain such a dream. And, while we may never represent our country in the Olympic games, we can certainly create our own goals, aspire to a higher level of sport and quest for optimum health.

The inspiration for the Vionic line is to bring our proven technology to athletes who rely on their feet for ultimate performance. It is my experience that many common athletic pains and injuries occur from poor lower limb alignment. Additionally, the feet are pushed to the extreme during training and are rarely given the proper recovery they require to stay healthy. Vionic offers the relief, recovery and pain-preventative support they need to maximize performance.

Whether you’re trying to beat a PR in a 10k or simply making time to walk three times a week, this is an ideal sandal option for after-sport recovery.

Healthy Summer Feet

It’s warming up outside, school is almost out and there are vacations to be taken. While planning your summer holiday, the great amount of walking you may endure should be a pro, rather than a con. If you simply plan to wear the right footwear, the rest of the packing process can be a snap and the exercise will be rather enjoyable.

Our summer sandals with built-in orthotic technology will provide the support you need to walk in comfort, on whatever adventurous road your travels may take you. If you’re looking for extra stability and customization for a fast-paced getaway, I recommend a style with adjustability, such as Layla or Porto II. Our sports recovery Vionic sandals also provide the same Orthaheel technology in an easy, sporty and adjustable slip-on.

Our customers share these thoughts exactly. Just this spring, they’ve shared with us these reviews: “I love these shoes. I can walk and stand on my feet all day and no pain.” And, “I absolutely LOVE these shoes!! They are so flexible and have helped with the knee & back issues.”

In closing, don’t let foot pain keep you from summer fun. Whether its walking around the block with your children or grandchildren or traveling to some distant place you’ve always dreamed of, we want you to experience well-being with every step.

New Spring Sandals: Something for Everyone

This season, like seasons past, we are proud to offer you an array of superior quality, stylish shoes with proven technology to help you on your way to comfort and pain relief. We listened to your feedback and expanded our spring and summer sandal line. We know no two feet (nor two people's tastes) are the same, and our design team has crafted sandals featuring full adjustability in slip-on, back-strap and toe post styles. I’m also pleased to share that we've recently introduced Orthaheel technology in two cork/rubber footbed sandals that are made in Spain, both of which feature leather uppers and suede liners.

We endeavor to provide you with trusted technology to help ease the aches and pains that can be caused by over-pronation. It is our hope that with an array of new styles, you’ll be able to find just the right fit for your style and comfort.

Travel Pain-Free

This is the time of year when so many of us head out of town to escape winter weather. Whether it's the beach, a family theme park or another favorite destination, foot pain can bring an early end to a memorable trip.

With all the walking you’ll likely do on your vacation, focusing on your footwear choice before packing your bags is imperative. Orthaheel is a stylish, supportive flip-flop and sandal solution that will keep you in comfort all-day long. Our built-in orthotic technology will provide the stability you need to ensure you are free from foot pain on your travels.

Don’t just take my word for it. We’ve heard from many customers that our sandals have saved them from foot pain on their vacations. Kate, a devoted Orthaheel customer, wrote of her Tide flip flops, “I even went on a week-long trip to Disney World and walked all day, every day…they were excellent!”

Don’t let foot pain slow you down on your travels. Think before you pack your shoes and visit Orthaheel for a great selection of men’s and women’s sandals and walking shoes.

Walk your way to well-being

This time of year so many people are striving to fulfill their New Year's resolution to start a regular exercise program. One of the easiest forms of exercise that almost anyone can do is walking. As Dr. Andrew Weil suggests, walking is the ideal exercise because it's what your body is designed to do and carries the least risk of injury.

However, without proper footwear walking can be painful, making it difficult to maintain an active lifestyle. With quality, supportive footwear that restores your foot's proper alignment and function, walking can become one of your favorite activities. Orthaheel's Walker Shoes can help even those with foot pain get started. Our removable motion-controlling footbed features contoured support and a deep heel cup that helps realign your feet to keep you moving with maximum comfort and support.

One of our customers, Sally, even says, "I could walk across the country in my Orthaheel Walkers. I love them! I've got me some happy feet!!!"

Now is a great time to start your walking routine or to set a goal to move more. We're committed to your well-being with every step and are confident Orthaheel products can help bring you relief from the foot, ankle and other lower leg pains that may interfere with your ability to move in comfort.

Pamper your Feet with Cozy, Supportive Slippers

As the weather gets colder, we tend to spend more time indoors, which can be surprisingly hard on our feet. Especially as holidays approach, we spend hours standing in the kitchen cooking and cleaning, often resulting in aches and pains in our feet, lower legs, knees and back. Most people walk around their house barefoot or in slippers with little support.

It is difficult to find slippers that offer enough support, and almost impossible to use your own orthotics with traditional slippers. Orthaheel now offers many women’s and men’s slipper styles to help you keep your feet cozy and comfortable while providing the support you need around the house. The new Verona and Venice styles are made from soft, breathable Italian wool and feature hand-crafted design accents. And our plush, adjustable Relax and Gemma slippers come in several stylish colors.

All of our slippers were designed with our award-winning biomechanical orthotic footbed with a deep heel cup to stabilize, support and realign the feet, helping to improve posture and balance. We are excited to offer you this extensive slipper collection and are confident you will find the perfect style for you.

Choose your Fall Shoes Wisely

Fall is the time of year when wardrobe and footwear choices are difficult due to the ‘in-between’ weather most of us experience. It’s often a time when women switch from open-toe sandals to flat shoes that typically offer little to no support. In fact, a recent USA Today article criticized women’s shoe choices these days, especially flat ballet-style slippers with no structure or support. The article quoted a podiatrist as saying that today’s popular shoes have contributed to women’s common foot complaints and even ankle, knee, hip and back problems.

The Orthaheel fall shoe collection is a great option for stylish, casual shoes offering the support needed to protect feet and lower legs from common aches and pains. Our new shoes feature the award-winning orthotic technology that helps restore your feet to their natural (“neutral”) position, thereby helping to improve posture and balance. Our fall shoes also proudly display the Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), which recognizes the new Orthaheel styles as excellent footwear choices.

When looking for shoes this season, explore our new line of shoes and slippers. They are ideal for casual fall outings, long foliage-viewing walks, and even around the house.

Exciting New Fall Styles

We love hearing from our customers. Recently we’ve been hearing many comments like: “Love these sandals. Now if you could make a dress shoe,” from K.P.; and “I only wish they made a shoe appropriate for work.” from Dee Dee. These customers’ wishes have been answered with our new Melissa slip-on mule and many more Fall styles we’ll be introducing soon.

The stylish Melissa mule is a shoe that can be worn almost year-round, and even around the house. This is our only shoe designed on the same footbed as our popular medium-width sandals we launched this spring. Customers loved the fit and feel of the sandals, so it is only logical that we expand our offering in true medium-width footwear. The Melissa mules also include an adjustable strap and, of course, our built-in orthotic technology that supports and realigns the feet back to their natural position.

Be sure to check back on Orthaheelusa.com for more fall shoes and slippers coming soon.

Fall Collection - Something for Everyone

Fall is around the corner, which usually means breaking out your warmer wardrobe, complete with close-toed shoes. Most dedicated Orthaheel customers bemoan the end of sandal season as it typically means putting orthotics back in their casual and dress shoes.

This year we’re pleased to introduce a new line of shoes with our built-in orthotic technology. Our product designers have been busy creating a collection of casual styles, including slip-on mules, mary janes, lace-up oxfords and more. Though the styles differ, all shoes feature our award-winning biomechanical orthotic that supports your feet and helps realign the lower legs, helping to improve posture and balance. The shoes’ flexible and lightweight construction provides essential support and stability.

Since introducing the first built-in orthotic flip flop sandal in Australia over 10 years ago, many people have found that pain relief can be natural and affordable for everyone. I’ve heard so many customers say, “At last I can have stylish shoes that don’t look ‘orthopedic’!” Another customer who just tried our new fall shoes thanked us by saying, “I had worried that I would have to wear socks with my sandals for fall…“

Thanks to your encouragement and requests for ‘more’, our 2011 fall shoe collection is our largest one yet! We look forward to your continued feedback and reviews. Visit a nearby store or check back during the season to see the latest styles for men and women.

Summer Comfort and Support

It seems that the majority of the country is finally feeling the heat of summer. Though it’s exciting for most people to break out their shorts and sandals, those who suffer from constant foot pain struggle every summer to find supportive footwear that also keeps their feet cool.

Since Orthaheel introduced the first built-in orthotic flip flop sandal in Australia over 10 years ago, many people have found they can have their sandals and comfort, too. We now offer 11 styles of sandals, from the basic black flip-flop to fun and feminine floral sandals in a variety of colors.

Our customers have found relief from our sandals and are able to enjoy their summer activities. Kathi told us about her Tide Flip-Flops, "We spend a lot of time on our boat, so my feet were always in pain until I found this flip flop.” Andre also commented, “I love the comfort of wearing flip-flops, especially at the beach…For the first time I can wear flip-flops for hours and walk reasonable distances without foot pain.”

According to Michael King, DPM, president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), “People don’t have to give up wearing this type of footwear altogether. There are certain types of flip-flops that offer a superior amount of stability and support than others.” Orthaheel is proud to offer flip-flops and sandals that carry the APMA Seal of Acceptance, considered to be among the best choices when selecting a shoe and orthotic that promotes quality foot health.

Step Into Spring

I wrote to you last month about our new width selection for our Walker shoes. We are excited to also introduce a selection of medium width sandals in our new Spring collection. We have three styles to introduce with a footbed that is a bit more narrow than that of our existing sandals. Our Lisa Flip Flops, Porto Adjustable Slides and Allegre Sandals offer style and a great fit for those with a medium foot.

As Spring approaches, everyone wants to break out their new wardrobe and open-toe shoes to celebrate the weather. Those who suffer from foot pain struggle at this time of the year to find shoes that not only provide the comfort and support they need, but are seasonally appropriate. We’ve continued to expand our range of sandals to provide a variety of options with everything from our basic Wave flip flops to the feminine and stylish Lisa sandals, available in a variety of new colors.

As I’ve said again and again, it’s our customers who really do the best at describing our shoes and their benefits. One recent review really touched us that I’d like to share with you. For Monya, our Tide Sandals were “Life Changing”, helping with both her back pain and plantar fasciitis.  We are motivated to continue changing lives and helping you, too, move without pain.

Pamper your Feet

Now that the weather is finally warming up a bit, it’s time to free your feet from closed toe shoes and spruce them up for sandal season.

The APMA (American Podiatric Medical Association) recommends several tips to get your feet ready for sandals, including soaking, scrubbing and moisturizing. According to APMA member podiatrist Crystal Holmes, DPM, “Pampering the feet promotes good hygiene and will alert you to any problem areas that may need treatment from a podiatrist before slipping into sandals this spring.”

To get you started, this month we’re offering a complementary footcare kit with any purchase on Orthaheelusa.com. The revitalizing lotion and foot salts included are the perfect tools to pamper your feet.

Once you’re ready to wear sandals, it’s also important to choose wisely to ensure ongoing foot health. Orthaheel is honored that many of our shoes and orthotics have joined a select group of products proudly displaying the APMA Seal of Acceptance. Evaluated by a team of APMA podiatrists, these products are shown to allow for the most normal foot function and promote quality health.

Visit Orthaheelusa.com to find our collection of spring and summer sandals. With your new shoes and footcare kit, you’ll be on your way to healthy feet.

Support your feet at home

People who suffer from heel pain know the feeling when they first get out of bed - the sharp, piercing pain that comes from the first morning step. This familiar feeling in those with plantar fasciitis occurs because the plantar fascia pain subsides when feet are in their relaxed position and not bearing weight. The first step out of bed in the morning brings back the problem at its worst when the feet aren't properly supported.

To help ease the pain, I instruct my patients to leave a pair of supportive shoes or slippers directly by their bed so their first step is one with proper support. Our line of Orthaheel slippers is the perfect solution for early morning movement around the house. The built-in orthotic technology provides the support you need, plus you'll love the cozy comfort on cold hard wood or tile floors on chilly fall mornings.

Our customers always seem to say it best. Tara, a loyal Orthaheel customer says, "LOVE these slippers! Now that I wear them around the house my feet don't hurt when I go outside and wear 'normal' shoes. These slippers made a huge change in the way my feet and legs feel."

Footwear for Active Lifestyles

Over the years in my podiatry practice, I’ve treated thousands of athletes, both professional and amateur. Athletes and those who are frequently active often experience lower limb, knee and heel pain during and after exercise. Orthaheel’s built-in orthotic technology helps control over pronation, a common problem in athletes leading to instability, pain, and even injury. Our products are perfect for the casual walker, professional triathlete and everything in between.

We developed our Kiwi and Kinetic sandal styles specifically with the active individual in mind. The quick-dry sports mesh lining offers added comfort for after sport therapy or outdoor activities. The Orthaheel Walker Shoe was also designed to keep you moving with maximum comfort and support. The contoured orthotic foot bed helps to realign your feet and posture so that you can achieve your fitness goals. Our new Active Orthotics can be placed in your fitness shoe of choice for increased support and comfort.

Though they were designed to enhance your active lifestyle, you'll want to wear your Orthaheel shoes and orthotics for more than your exercise routine.

Travel in Comfort this Summer

In my practice I’ve heard countless stories from patients whose foot pain threatens to keep them off their feet. Summer is a particularly difficult time of year, with the kids out of school and everyone looking forward to long-awaited vacations to the beach, theme park or other destination. Yet foot pain can bring an early end to a memorable holiday

My suggestion: With all the walking you’ll likely do, it’s important to focus on your footwear choice before packing your bags. In the heat of summer, Orthaheel provides a great solution with stylish, supportive flip-flops and sandals that will keep you in comfort all-day long. Our built-in orthotic technology will provide the stability you need to ensure you are free from foot pain on your travels.

Many of our summer styles received the APMA (American Podiatric Medical Association) Seal of Acceptance and were recently featured in a Yahoo! News article as “the right kind of flip-flops to wear this summer.” In the same article, Dr. Jacqueline Sutera of the APMA reminds readers of the article that “not all flip-flops are created equal.” I couldn’t agree more.

Don’t let foot pain slow you down on your summer travels. Think before you pack your shoes and visit Orthaheel for a great selection of men’s and women’s sandals.

Toning shoes: Are they good for you?

Recently I’ve been asked about what seems to be the latest fad for feet: Toning or rocker-bottom shoes that promise to “trim” and “burn” while you walk.

Truth be told, these shoes are not for everyone and the reason is quite simple. Shoes that promote “instability” for the purpose of “firing muscular activity” actually work against proper biomechanical function. In other words, muscles and other areas are challenged to perform tasks for which they weren’t designed. This can over-work and cause stress to the muscles, feet and legs.

Considering that the majority of people pronate (feet roll inward) and are therefore predisposed to some form of biomechanical dysfunction, the instability-based concept is even more troubling. Particularly for people with existing biomechanical problems, this type of footwear can lead to greater pain and/or injury.

My suggestion for burning calories and trimming inches? Wear properly fitting footwear that maximizes your body’s biomechanical efficiency. If your feet are comfortable, well supported and pain-free, they will enable you to walk greater distances more frequently. This is the real key to tightening and toning.

Our clinically-proven Orthaheel Tri-planar Motion Control technology helps re-align the feet, providing relief from many common lower limb aches and pains. Orthaheel sandals and walking shoes offer built-in orthotic support, and our ¾- and full-length orthotics can fit your favorite footwear. See what our customers say about how Orthaheel has helped them walk away from pain and get on with living.

Your Own Style Secret
Through the years of my practice I have learned that the summer time is the most difficult season for people with foot and lower leg pain.
When the weather warms up everyone wants to celebrate by donning their warm-weather sandals. Those who wear orthotics know the challenge (custom orthotics don’t fit most sandals) and many are forced to go without, treading through the summer in enclosed shoes.
Since introducing the first built-in orthotic flip flop sandal in Australia over 10 years ago, many people have found they can have their sandals and comfort, too. I’ve heard so many customers say, “At last I can have stylish shoes that don’t look ‘orthopedic’!”

Après-sport Sandals are Perfect For Post-Workout Pain Relief
In my Australian podiatry practice I treated many amateur and professional athletes. A common complaint was not only how to relieve lower limb pain during exercise and competition, but how to ease the transition after their activity.
For these patients I recommended that they step right in to après-sport footwear that provides flexible support and stability. At the time there were few suitable products, which is largely what inspired the design of the original Orthaheel flip flop sandals with built-in orthotic support. These sandals quickly became the flip flop of choice for athletes such as Olympic triathlete Loretta Harrop and the Australian Football league players (in fact, Orthaheel is the only flip flop these athletes are permitted by the league to wear post-training!). We’ve continued to expand our range of orthotic sandals, including this season’s newest Kiwi and Kinetic styles which recently earned the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Approval. And our popular Walker shoes – also approved by the APMA - are now available in half-sizes.
In the words of one of our customers, “Orthaheel helps you get where you want to go on your own two feet.” I hope we can continue to help you, too, move without pain.

Don't let summer's most popular footwear take the spring out of your step!
Choosing a foot-friendly sandal for summer can be a 'flop' unless you know the facts.
Recently there have been several articles in prestigious publications ranging from the New York Times to the American Podiatric Medical Association, bringing attention to a growing problem with summer's hottest products, the flip-flop.
When the weather heats up many of us slip on our flip-flops and head to the beach, barbeques and other outdoors activities. Usually, these fun times are brought down by flip-flop related problems including sore feet, ankles and legs. Meanwhile, many orthotic-wearers find themselves without warmweather options.
Our Orthaheel flip-flops are a convenient, pain-free 'natural healing' solution. Orthaheel products are designed with our innovative orthotic technology which is clinically proven to reduce excess pronation and help relieve associated pain. Pronation is a contributing factor to 'flat feet' and many of the common aches and pains associated with poor lower limb alignment caused by regular flip-flops.
It is with great pleasure we inform you that the following Orthaheel products are now approved by and carry the APMA* Seal of Acceptance: Tide sandals, Ryder sandals , Wave sandals ,Walker athletic shoe and the ¾ - length Regular, Full-length Workforce, Full-length Sport and Slimfit Casual orthotics. Evaluated by a committee of podiatrists, these products are shown to allow for normal foot function and promote quality health."

When your heads hurts, could it be your feet?
Correct foot function is essential to the way we walk, our overall posture and anatomical alignment of the knees, hips, spine, neck and head. Clinical studies have shown that changing the position of the feet can even affect alignment in our jaw!
Faulty foot function (including excess pronation - or rolling inwards of the feet) can have a profound effect on our daily lives. You don't have to be an athlete to suffer from the effects of poor foot function. In today's modern society, every step we take on a hard flat unforgiving surface causes our feet to compensate un-naturally."
